Research projects and news from members:
Sarah Glassford spent the spring/summer 2017 semester as a co-op intern in the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick. She is now back at Western University at the mid-point in her Master of Library and Information Science degree, and looks forward to putting her newly acquired toolkit of practical skills and theoretical concepts to work for the CNHH after graduating in spring 2018. In particular, she has a new understanding of research data management (useful in writing SSHRC grants!), the challenges of digitization and digital preservation, and the ins and outs of archival appraisal, selection, arrangement, and description (all relevant to aid organizations looking to better preserve and/or access their historical materials). She hopes to take a course on digital exhibits in the winter semester, which also has obvious utility for CNHH projects in the future.
Chloe Dennis* is working at Carleton’s Archives and Research Collections on a series of lantern slides donated by CNHH member John Foster. The catalogue is here: https://archie.library.carleton.ca/index.php/john-foster-fonds Each of them is described when you click within the “series” on the left (click on the “…” and more appear.) Chloe produced this web exhibit to show the value of the collection: https://arc.library.carleton.ca/exhibits/john-william-foster-fonds-lantern-slides/introduction
Sonya DeLaat and Dominique Marshall continue to work on the project of a virtual exhibit on images of refugees and aid launched last Spring.
Ian Smillie and Hunter Davies have asked the CNHH to participate in an appeal to retired humanitarian and development workers to deposit their archives at Carleton’s Archives and Research Collections. The initiative is almost ready for a launch.
The CNHH has collaborated with the Carleton University Disability Research Group for a panel in the exhibition Envisioning Technologies devoted to refugees and disability. Beth Robertson is the Research Associate in charge of this initiative. The draft will be workshopped at the upcoming Disability | Technology | Inclusion A Symposium on Interdisciplinary Research, History Exhibits and Pedagogy.
David Webster and Greg Donaghy are preparing a collection of essays out of the conference Conference A Samaritan State” Revisited: Historical Perspectives on Canadian Foreign Aid, 1950–2016, Ottawa, Global Affairs Canada, December 2016.
Sandrine Murray continues her work as Research Assistant of the CNHH this Fall, combining her skills as an emerging journalist and historian. We have made a successful bid for an intern next summer with the MITACs Globallink program. The interviews will begin at the turn of the new year. |
